You may not always have the right words. You may not always know how to help. You may feel inadequate, exhausted, or afraid. But you can always pray. And your prayers are powerful. The Scriptures promise that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16). And there is no righteousness quite like the fierce, stubborn, unwavering love of a parent praying for a child.
So pray, Mom. Pray, Dad. Pray on his birthday and on the ordinary Tuesdays. Pray when he is near and when he is far. Pray when he is walking with God and when he has wandered away. Pray with tears and with whispers, with joy and with desperation. Because your prayers are the greatest gift you will ever give him – more lasting than any inheritance, more valuable than any advice, more powerful than any protection you could offer on your own.
And trust this: The God who knit him together in your womb is the same God who holds him now. He loves your son more than you do – and that is a love beyond comprehension.
May his birthday be blessed. May his year be filled with grace. May he grow to be a man after God’s own heart. And may he always, always know that he is loved – by you and by the Father who never stops pursuing him.
