The facts of his life, though obscured by the mists of time, reveal a soul of extraordinary courage. A Roman soldier of the late third century, probably of Cappadocian origin, he was martyred at Lydda in Palestine during the fierce persecution of the Emperor Diocletian. When faced with the choice between offering sacrifice to the Roman gods or confessing Christ, he chose the sword. His cult spread rapidly throughout the East, and when Crusaders journeyed to the Holy Land, they took inspiration from this warrior saint. Richard the Lionheart placed himself and his army under St. George’s protection, and King Edward III founded the Order of the Garter with St. George as its patron in 1348. Before the great victory of Agincourt in 1415, King Henry V called upon his aid, and from that time forward, he was secured as the patron of England.

Conclusion
As we conclude this treasury of 50 prayers to the great martyr St. George, we are reminded of the words of St. Paul to the Ephesians: “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11). Let us then have recourse to this mighty intercessor with confidence and devotion. Let us invoke him in our necessities, recommend to him our families, our countries, and our souls. And let us strive to imitate his virtues, that we may one day share his glory.
